Camp Talk About It
A few years ago, we surveyed our membership to find out what they most wanted from their association. Resoundingly, what came back was a need for speech therapy.
Speech therapy is critically important for most individuals with Down Syndrome, however, speech therapy has been hard to find through the school system, and can be very expensive.
LDSA in collaboration with Liz MacKinnon of Rehab Place in Lambeth, Ontario, developed ‘Camp Talk About It”, which offers intensive speech therapy in a fun and enjoyable format at reduced cost to families. The program is run in sessions of 3 hours, once a week for 8 weeks.
Although the camp is offered for a specific age group, our goal is to expand the program to different age groups and offer sessions more often.

Communication Skills Program
The LDSA Communication Skills Program was created to allow for some of our older members (13 yrs+) to participate in a speech program within a group setting. The program’s goals are to improve speech intelligibility (being understood), improve expressive language abilities, improve reading and writing or visual communication skills, and improve social language skills. These intentions have been selected as they appear to be the primary communication needs identified through research for teens and young adults with Down syndrome.
